Increase in couples seeking divorce in January

For many people, New Year’s Day is a time of reflection and setting goals for the following year. Many people in Missouri and across the country use it as a time to consider how to have a happier, more fulfilling life in the next year. For some, this includes examining their relationship with their spouse and potentially seeking a divorce.

Many family law attorneys report experiencing an increase in the number of people seeking to end their marriage following the holidays. In fact, the first Monday following the holidays is known by some as “Divorce Day” due to the number of calls some law offices receive. This increase, some say, continues through the month of January.

Some professionals speculate on the reason for this increase. For some, the new year is simply a time to commit to taking a new direction in life, an admission that they no longer want to live their life that way. Often, families spend a great deal of time together during the holidays, making it more obvious for some that a relationship is not working.

Though it may be tempting to jump-start the divorce process and proceed quickly through it, some family law attorneys advise caution. Simply taking the time to completely understand the available options — especially when there are children involved — can help. For many in Missouri, an initial consultation with an experienced attorney can help them better understand their situation, including how any recent changes in the law might impact their personal situation.
