3 tips to avoid a DUI after a holiday party

On Behalf of | Nov 20, 2017 | St Louis Criminal Defense

The holiday season means it is the time where a lot of parties occur. From Thanksgiving to the New Year, you may be attending a lot of get-togethers with friends or family. If you are not careful, you could end up with a charge for driving under the influence after one of these parties.

According to Aetna, 40 percent of highway deaths during the holiday season are a result of drunk driving. With the holiday season underway, it is crucial to plan ahead and follow the tips below to avoid driving drunk.

1. Take a taxi or alternative transportation

Even if you are at a party that is close to your home, it is better to find another way to get back to your destination when you are drunk than driving your own car. Call a cab, take an Uber or take public transportation. The small price you will pay for these transportation options is far better than the costs of a DUI charge.

2. Stay overnight

When you are attending a holiday event and you know you will be consuming alcohol, staying with a friend or booking a room at a hotel is a great way to avoid a DUI arrest. Set this plan up beforehand so you do not give into the temptation to drive while you are drunk.

3. Choose a trustworthy designated driver

Of course, you have the option of relying on someone to drive you home. However, you should not choose just anyone, even if it is your best friend. Your designated driver must be someone who is completely reliable and commits to not taking a sip of alcohol. If someone says they are only going to have one or two beers, you cannot trust them to drive you home safely.

Be careful this holiday season. If you do not follow these tips, you could end up with a DUI charge on your way back from a holiday party.
